ZERO and Prostate Cancer Community Mourn the Death of Board Member John L. Willey

Skip Lockwood, chief executive officer and Jamie Bearse, chief operating officer of ZERO – The Project to End Prostate Cancer, issued the following statement on the passing of Mr. Willey:

“John Willey will be remembered as a war hero on two fronts – his service in Vietnam and afterward, his battle with prostate cancer. He was a dear friend and one of the greatest advocates in advancing prostate cancer research toward finding a cure.  His passion was contagious.  He would do anything to help others fight this terrible disease, and his personal battle with prostate cancer was both courageous and inspiring.

“Mr. Willey took an extremely active role in prostate cancer advocacy. He was a member of the Consumer Integration Panel of the Department of Defense’s Prostate Cancer Research Program, president of the Prostate Cancer Research PAC, testified twice before Congress to successfully request a funding increase for prostate cancer research, and participated in clinical research. He also appeared on Good Morning America and had been interviewed dozens of times by the media about prostate cancer.

“Mr. Willey became a leader in the prostate cancer cause, joining ZERO’s board of directors shortly after the organization was founded in 1996 and then serving as ZERO’s treasurer for the past nine years.  ZERO owes much of our success as an organization to him.”
